Custom and prefabricated foot orthoses available for fitting
This type of device is the most common type of orthosis that we manufacture at Island Orthotics Inc. Although there are any number of establishments that offer foot orthoses as part of their service there are just as many providers that offer an incomplete service. This is not to say that all foot orthoses manufactured by Island Orthotics Inc. are without fault but our level of skill, training and honesty have allowed Island Orthotics Inc. to provide this service in Victoria since 1989.The standard for the supply and manufacture of a pair of custom made foot orthoses is:
1. An assessment is performed in which one of our Orthotists examines the static and dynamic alignment of the foot and ankle, ankle range of motion (R.O.M.), patient goals and concerns, callous formation, joint alignment, and footwear.Modifications to Foot Orthoses and Footwear:
2. If it is determined that a foot orthoses is an appropriate treatment option than the patient is hand casted in a non-weight bearing subtalar neutral position. Other methods are used depending on the clinical assessment.
3. The orthoses are then custom fabricated from these casts. We use a variety of material combinations to achieve both patient comfort and biomechanical control. The fabrication time is approximately two weeks. The patient then returns for the fitting appointment. The foot orthoses are fitted into proper footwear and the patient is evaluated for fit and comfort including both static and dynamic alignment function.
4. Any modifications required to the orthoses after the supply are covered by the initial cost for a period of 3 months. The plaster cast originals are given to the patient for possible future use.
We also stock a number of prefabricated foot orthoses which are often used in less biomechanically involved situations. Another common use of prefabricated orthoses is for the pediatric foot which is constantly growing. To minimize costs (during growing years) the prefabricated option is often used for children with mild foot concerns while still providing improved biomechanical foot function. Our staff also commonly modify / refurbish existing foot orthoses and perform shoe modifications
