Ankle Injuries, Sports and non Athletic Injuries
Here is another common area of focus for Island Orthotics Inc. An "inversion sprain" or a rolling of an ankle is a very common injury seen in court sports such as basketball and volleyball and can also occur in daily living with a slip or stumble. The injury is most commonly described as having the outside or "lateral" ankle bone roll out and the heel or "calcaneous" roll in and under, "inversion".

There are a number of devices used to treat this injury and depending on your activity level, joint stability, activity goals and history the most appropriate orthosis is recommend. This selection may vary from a simple ankle wrap to a custom orthosis but most commonly used orthosis is the Active Ankle or the Aircast Stirrup.

Post Operative Ankle Management:
The most common injury involving the ankle is the fractured ankle (tibia and or fibula, referred to as the tib / fib fracture) this usually requires a surgery to pin the joint back together and an Aircast Foam or Pneumatic Walking Boot is prescribed by the surgeon. We stock both of these devices and have had great success with these devices.

The Aircast Walking Boot is also routinely used in the management of Achilles tendon rupture and repairs. An accommodative wedge is added to the boot and the Boot is worn instead of a traditional cast. This allows earlier mobilization, improved joint mobility and balance.
