Knee Ankle Foot Orthoses, KAFO
This is a type of orthosis that is commonly referred to as a long leg brace. It is a unique orthosis and one of the most challenging devices that a Certified Orthotist is called on to provide. Although there are number of variations on this device the most common application is in an individual that has a part paralysis of the lower extremity.The orthosis is designed to provide maximum stability to the involved joint and maximum mobility to the non involved joints. There have been a number of advancements made in the area of quadriceps muscle weakness bracing. Previously the brace used for individuals with a quadriceps weakness / paralysis was a locked knee brace type of device, meaning that the knee joint on the brace was locked until such time as the wearer manually unlocked the brace to sit. In the most recent designs the brace is designed to lock during the swing phase of walking (gait) and lock during the weight bearing phase of gait. This leads to definite improvements in the quality of the user's gait such as a smoother appearance in gait, less physical bending to lock and unlock and decrease in compensatory hip motion.
This new breed of long leg bracing is referred to as "Stance Control Orthoses" and there are a number of these systems available. Island Orthotics Inc. staff is trained in the assessment for and supply of the Horton Technology Brace, the Becker E Knee, UTX Knee and G-Knee. It should be noted that traditional custom KAFO's are commonly dealt with as well as the new stance control styles.
