Island Orthotics in the press; business profile, Senior Living
Imporve your mobility; Island Orthotics, January 2005
Afflicted with polio since early childhood, Stan* is now 70. After
his wife passed away, he remarried. Once retired, the happy coule enjoyed
taking cruises. Stan's wife only had one complaint - her husband couldn't
dance with her. With the aid of a custom made ankle foot orthosis (ankle
brace), however, Stan is now able to dance. And while he's no Gene Kelly,
it's made a world of difference to them both.
"I want patients to know they have this option," says Tim Witoski, Certified Orthotist of Island Orthotics. Locally owned and operated since 1989, Island Orthotics offers a wide range of options for clients suffering joint instability due to simple overuses to disabliling conditions.
Whether it's a recent injury or a nagging once experinced years ago on the sports field, Certified Orthotics are trained to assess for, recommend and fabricate custom made orthoses (brace). But equally important, the specailists at Island Orthotics can make a difference in the life of victims of neurological-based traumas, such as stroke, daibetes, or spinal surgery.
The secondary effects of such conditions often weakens ankles and feet, causing what is known as drop foot. Drop foot is an inability to lift one's toe off the ground, causing the sufferer to walk toe-heel, as opposed to hee-toe. A patient with drop foot has more difficulty adjusting for variations in the walking surface and is more susectible to dangerous falls.
Witoski says a simple orthosis can solve the problem and significantly improve the functions of daily life. Even stroke victims confined to wheelchairs have a better chance of improving transfers to their bed, car or the toilet with the use of an orthotsis, say Witoski.
The positional alignment of the joint dosen't change a client's neurological
deficit, but it does improve their functional position and quality of life.
"It dosen't cure them from disability, but it makes a great deal of differnce",
says Witoski. For some clients, custom orthoses can make the differnce
between employment and unemployment. For others, it's about enjoying life
and not letting physical limitations get in the way.
Another polio sufferer, Edward*, had a passion for cricket. Since his spine began collapsing inward, he could no longer offciate the sport. Fitted with a spinal brace from Island Orthotics, Edward was able to get involved again with the sport he loves.
With over 25 years of experince, the professional staff at Island Orthotics custom fabricate all types of unique devices. Each Certified Orthotist has a minimum eigth years of educational and practical training, and they work closely with ohysicians, theraposts and their clients to design, fabricate, fit and align orthoses that work to enhance functionality and quality of life.
