The Achilles tendon is a strong fibrous cord that connects the muscles in the back of your calf to your heel bone. If you overstretch your Achilles tendon it can tear completely or just partially. You might feel a pop or a snap and usually affects your ability to walk properly. The non surgical approach for treatment is with a walking boot with wedges to elevate your heel which allows the ends of the torn Achilles tendon to heal.
The function of the removable cast Boot is to prevent the Achilles tendon from stretching allowing it to heal while still keeping you mobile. You may be required to be non weight bearing on crutches initially but with the walking boot it speeds up the recovery and allows you to walk sooner than a conventional cast. It also allows you access to your leg to change surgical dressings, apply ice or progress with physiotherapy.
