A vertebral compression fracture occurs when the bones of the spine become compressed due to trauma. The vertebrae are most commonly broken in the lower back, but they may break in any portion of the spine. Traumatic fractures can occur with a fall from height in which the person lands on his or her feet or buttocks or a motor vehicle accident. These usually result in pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness.
To hyperextend the spine relieving the pain to the anterior vertebral body reducing the pressure the fracture site and therefore reducing the pain and symptoms caused by the nerve compression.
